The park's origins trace back to the amalgamation of areas from the former Gangau Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1972. This sanctuary encompassed territorial forests of the current North and South Panna Forest Division, with an incorporation of a segment from the adjacent Chhatarpur forest division in subsequent years. The reserved forests in the Panna district, along with protected forests on the Chhatarpur side, hearken back to the hunting preserves of the bygone rulers of Panna, Chhatarpur, and Bijawar princely states.

Panna National Park stands as a living testament to the historical and ecological legacy of the region. Situated in the northern expanse of Madhya Pradesh, the Panna Tiger Reserve stands as a vital habitat for these majestic creatures within the undulating Vindhyan Hills. The region boasts a delicate ecosystem characterized by dynamic dry deciduous forests, vast plateaus, and picturesque gorges. Panna unfolds as a realm of captivating waterfalls, and natural and archaeological wonders, steeped in legends and cultural richness. The Ken River, meandering through this landscape, adds an unparalleled charm to the surroundings.

Bounded by natural barriers, the reserve is enveloped by teak forests in the north and Teak-b mixed forests in the east. The Vindhyan Hills, stretching in the Northeast-Southwest direction, seamlessly connect the eastern and western wildlife populations, fostering the diverse habitats essential for the flourishing of a wide array of wild animals. Panna Tiger Reserve stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature's beauty and wildlife conservation.
